Graduate unemployment just hit a five-year high, but the real story is which jobs are disappearing and which ones are growing.
Korea counted 481,000 unemployed college graduates in the second quarter, the highest for that quarter since 2021, with people in their 20s and 30s making up 64% of the total. A Korea Labor Institute study found youth jobs fell 210,000 over three years since ChatGPT's rollout, while jobs for workers in their 50s rose 200,000. In translation, low-end freelance work has roughly halved even as high-level interpretation demand rose, illustrating a broader split between standardized and judgment-based roles. The labor ministry plans to announce a dedicated early-career support program next week.
